Tasty Tuesday Pt. 1: Thanksgiving Edition

Since Thanksgiving is today, I waited until today for a special edition of Tasty Tuesday!

One problem I have in my current place is lack of space. In Illinois, I ha a ton of space to bake and cook. Then mix drinks. Post it all and share with you guys. It’s a HUGE reason why the blogs slowed down. I thought hard on what I could do this year that was different but got dinner done quickly with a small space.

Crockpot! Why I didn’t think about this before? I mean how would one crockpot their turkey?

I’m glad you asked.

Last year, I marinaded my turkey in honey and orange marmalade. It was a hit, but being in Southern California, it gets too warm in here while cooking. Getting around some dishes aren’t possible, but the turkey…..it may work. I googled to see if anyone had tried it before.

Of course they did! I needed a bigger crockpot, which I was game for buying, because that’s my vice. LOL. The bigger crockpot gave more space to hold to the turkey and add my flavoring without it boiling over. After washing off the turkey, I placed it in the pot, and added my seasonings, and juices.

Now, you don’t have to add juices, but, with what I decided on it fit perfectly. Cutting a granny apple and naval orange, I placed it inside the turkey. I used apple orange pineapple juice for the juices to ad to the turkey, and seasoned with honey and garlic pepper.

One thing I want to stress is, to cook the turkey on high for two hours, and then on low for the reminder six hours.

I can smell the the turkey from over here. The smell you guys…….oh. my. glob. Between that, and the pies momhulk made last night……it smells awesome in here!

In part 2, coming later, I’ll post pictures, and tell you about what else we got on the menu!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Sweet Potato Chili with Cornbread Cake

I think I’m making this on the weekend!

Common Sense Mommy

I told you peeps I was giving the gifts of recipes.

This one is healthy, quick, and so tasty, you may not have leftovers. Now, the backstory to my madness is hilarious if you think about it. In previous posts, I watch travel, food and cooking networks. I get ideas from these channels, or I’ll be out and about, especially at the store and see something and it’s like the cartoon, I get the lightbulb over my head, and my face is about as giddy as a fat chick losing 75 pounds.

May I’ll be that chick one day.

Anyway, I had a recipe that I tried about six years ago, Pumpkin turkey chili. It was a hit. I wanted to make something of my own. I wasn’t to challenge myself. I did. This recipe was not only awesome, and the kids loved it, but I got them to eat…

Flirty Friday: Charming isn’t so charming

As fast as he came into the picture he is gone.

It hurt, but not as bad as the last person. Though I hope he’s happy, wish he didn’t do this conversation on my birthday.

I guess too many obstacles were there. Back to the dating pool I go. Honestly, don’t know how much more I can take.

Can a guy be honest, proud of what we could build, and see me as woman that I am? Respect me? Who knows. All I know is that 34 isnt starting off too well. Doesn’t mean that it will be bad but didn’t need to get dumped on my birthday.

Tasty Tuesday

Peeps!

I’m so sorry about the day late recipes! My oven is broken, which has me re doing everything last minute. I hate that.

In any event, here’s the dinner we had today that is what I like to call ‘Plan B’.

Now, if you guys remember, I love marinades, because it does all the work for me. The longer it sits, that juicer it is. Well in this case for the steaks, I didn’t do that. I used marinade yes, but didn’t let it sit over night like I normally do.

I made stove top grilled steak. I used boneless steak, and caught a sale on those, which is awesome! Normally I’ve seen people use a cast iron pan, or griddle. We are on a budget, so I used a frying pan with butter. As I began to fry the steaks, I brushed the marinade on each side of the steak, every time I flipped the steak. I used the brown sugar bourbon marinade from McCormicks. Just cooked it unti it was well done. If you want it to be rare, it doesn’t affect the method, just less time.

image

Next was the sweet potato/apple/butternut dish. I used cubed sweet potatoes, canned yams, cubed butternut squash, and apple slices. Just used my apple slicer/corer to get the apples evenly sliced. I mixed it altogether in a glass casserole dish. I then took half stick of butter, 3 tbsp sugar and cinnamon and melted it in the microwave. Bake at 375 until everything is soft. Took me three hours in a toaster oven, but it worked!

image

Lastly the veggies. I combined canned artichoke hearts, diced tomatoes, sliced zucchini, and sliced mushroom in another casserole dish. I bought sauteed butter that you would normally saute veggies or whatever you choose in a pan. Instead I took those chunks, and evenly put them on top of the veggies, and baked them. Real simple.

Most of this dinner you put together, and walk away. I again apologize for the last post, I’m about to get real ugly if my oven isn’t fixed soon, I have so much planned around it!

I hope you guys enjoyed the recipes today, and I can’t wait for next Tuesday!

Tasty Tuesday: When you’re broke!

Peeps!

I’m here and back! I was so tired from the trip getting here to California, it was crazy, so I took a break of some sorts, and rested a little. I’m here until Thursday, so the treat you guys get this week will be I’ll be visiting some food trucks out here, sightseeing, and possibly hit a bar or two to get some speciality drinks to share! I’m excited!

What I did notice was I did no tasty tuesday! What. The. Heck?!

I’m so sorry you guys. What they don’t tell you is when you go on vacation, it’s stressful trying to get to the damn vacation. So worth it, but you get crazy ass duh brain in the process.

Alright, here we go! I dedicate this to every single person I know, who is trying to be grown up without calling mom/dad. LOL.

We flew out to my mom’s house, and I knew I had to go shopping for food. I mean you don’t go to another person’s house and eat all their food, unless they planned for it. My brother was here, but my mom is at my grandparents helping them out right now. So it’s Mellow Hulk(my younger brother) on his own. He’s a creative guy, and pretty responsible. What I didn’t know was he was on starve mode. Like for real starve mode. I’m looking like, you’re sick, no food, and why didn’t you tell me dude?

Now, I wasn’t mad at him, it was more of a) how the hell did you make it this long without food, and b)why didn’t you say anything? No worries! Common Sense Mommy is here to the rescue! Now, I remember from my days of living here, SoCal 99cent stores are awesome when you’re on a budget or broke. I also remember since they grown just about everything here, a lot of fod are cheaper then near my house.

My house: avacados, $1/each. Mom’s House: avacados, 3 for $1.

You get my point? Ok. So today’s recipe is how to stretch out food on a budget. Here’s your list.

Bag of potoates
1 whole chicken
1 bag of rice
1 box pasta
bag of salad
tomatoes
onions
1 lb strawberries
1 lb blueberries
bananas
salt
pepper
1 can diced tomatoes
Salad dressing(some balsamic or vinaigrette)

Night one: crockpot your chicken with salt, pepper, diced tomatoes, and sliced potatoes(or wrap in foil to make baked potatoes). While your letting your chicken cook, make a salad with the bag you bought, cut up HALF of the strawberries, chop one banana, and add tomatoes and blueberries, toss, and add salad dressing.

Clean up your leftovers, and store properly.

Night two: reheat some of your chicken, and make some rice. Boil the rice with the homemade broth in the chicken. If you have fresh tomaotes, chop and add those with diced oinons. Serve over the rice, with any leftover salad you have.

Night three: take a box of pasta and cook to according to directions. Any chicken you have left, take in of the bone, add the pasta with 1/2 cup of mayo or miracle whip. Stir in that with the can of diced tomatoes and 2 tbsp of the salad dressing you have.

Three nights of dinner for a young person, on a budget. You can double or triple it if you have more people or kids in involved. I bought more things to stretch out the food since I had more to work with. Need something to drink? $1 with get you 2 liters of water, and another $3 could get you drink mix ins to add to the water so you have somethikng else to drink other than plain H2O. Not glamourous, but you get what you need.

He had an sinus infection and bronchitis, so food was the furthest thing from his mind, but he still needed to eat. So here you go! Tasty Tuesday on a tight ass budget! Because when you are just starting out, or you just started a new job, you are broke, but still need to eat!

Next tuesday, I’ll have something awesome! Until next time!

Congratulations!

I know we took a slight break from holly days, but we will getting back to that later today.

Right now, I want to write a piece on a great family I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know in a short time.

Punk Rock Papa and Mommy’s Happy Hour, have an awesome family, and just recently(like two days ago) welcomed their new addition to the family.

I’ve gotten to know Punk Rock Papa over a short amount of time, and he’s an awesome dude. His page is hilarious, and he’s real supportive of upcoming bloggers, like myself. I haven’t had the pleasure of talking with his other half, but love her facebook page, and I can tell from the post on both pages, they fit together perfectly.

The reason I’m writing this is to say congratulations! I said the day of, but I figure I’d formally put it out there for the family, and my peeps to see. Kudos to you being able to have a set of twins, and now a newborn. I shall pray for your sanity. LOL. Seriously, your tribe, or how I refer to mine, your crew rocks, and I hope you are as blessed as everyone is when they have a new addition to the family.

In your honor, I slept in for you two, because let’s be real, you’ll never see that again for another 10-12 years. LOL.

Again, congrats on the new addition, and peeps, go onto both facebook pages and check them out! Hilarious and cuteness combined? Can’t go wrong there!
